I blog in the travel space and, the more competitor research I do, the more I see a pattern of bad quality content making its way to the top.
I used to think this was a matter of age—if a blog had been around since the early days, they could get away with producing work that wasn't as good. But looking at these rankings was quite sobering: https://everything-everywhere.com/travel-blog-directory/
For example, World of Wanderlust was only created 2 years ago (as opposed to the average 10-20) and has managed to amass a decent SEO score and huge following despite most of her posts being short and unoriginal (example here).
Hand Luggage Only is another one. They post often but their writing is very unrefined (it's like they're just writing in a diary and publishing), with again not much to offer except for some nice photos (example here).
I don't mean to be down on other bloggers at all (I think it's awesome that they've built such successful online followings without slaving away over every post!), I'm just genuinely curious how this is possible, and whether or not I should be taking the "content is king" methodology so seriously in 2019.
Any insights would be greatly appreciated! :)
