How do I encourage readers to sign up for updates?

As a reader, I simply hate it when websites use pop ups to have me sign up with my email. I think it's much too pushy and I always decline. So I refuse to install something like that on my blog. But at the same time, I would like my readers to be updated whenever I write a new post. From personal experience, I tend to forget a blog, even though I love its content because I forgot to sign up. Am I wrong about not having a pop up? What do you do to encourage readers to sign up? Thank you in advance for your advice.
