Hello reddit world,
So i'm in over my head and I would like to send out an SOS to the writing community.
I've always been intrigued with the idea of being an "author" and honing a creative outlet so versatile as writing. As someone whose been pretty into art and creativity my whole life I've always viewed writing as the "big leagues" of the creative process and have always intended to take my own shot at it someday. Unfortunately though as some of you may have guessed, every time I set off to create a writing habit I get intimidated, overwhelmed, and quickly discouraged. I find that I struggle to come up with ideas to write about, and even when I do come up with ideas, I bog myself down with expectations and I beat myself up knowing that no one will ever read what I write so I end up just feeling stupid.
Recently I started reading "Show Your Work" by Austin Kleon and he talks a tremendous amount about sharing your learning process and growing with other artists. This caught my attention and really lit a fire under me to get the ball rolling with this concept because the internet must be so full of potential interactions between writers and resources to learn from...The only problem is I have no idea where to get started.
I read a lot of non-fiction books and blog posts having to do with the whole life advice, self help genre, and that's typically where my own writing ends up taking me. But I also read a fair amount of fiction too (mostly sci-fi and horrors...I'm on a Star Wars kick as of late) and would love to learn about the writing process for that as well.
Basically what I'm looking for are resources that come to mind...forums, other subredits, communities on the internet where I can grow as a writer. But also I would like to hear stories from other writers who went through this already or are facing the same thing right now. How they got into writing and broke past the learning curve.
